Mark your calendars now for the fall
picnic
The
Fellowship Committee has set September 6th for the annual
potluck/picnic from noon to dusk. This year the picnic will be held on the
church patio area on Saturday, the day before the Church’s annual Kick-Off
Sunday.
The
whole family is invited to come, and bring guests! The Fellowship Committee will
provide free hotdogs and beverages to go with the potluck. If your last name
starts with letters A through O, bring a salad or tray of sandwiches, and if
your name starts with P through Z, bring a dessert. Either way, bring a serving
for eight.
Entertainment includes games and fun for all ages. Bring
your checkerboard, dominoes, Frisbee or whatever you like, and plan to spend the
afternoon visiting with old friends and making new ones.
The
Fellowship Committee is looking for helpers to set up for the picnic from 10
a.m. to noon. For more information, please call Shirley Hobart at 776- 2828. We
hope to see all of you there!
Notes from The
Memorial Committee
The Memorial Committee members recently planted four new
camellia bushes along the north side of the Church to replace the old ones. A
special thanks goes to William Schauer Jr. for installing the irrigation system
to keep new arrivals alive and happy.
The purchase of a television/DVD combination for the
children’s ministry was approved and members are on the look out for a new
quality system at a nice price.
Look for an upcoming announcement from Memorials
Committee about the construction of a new patio component to accommodate a
two-sided barbeque insert for cooking with gas and/or charcoal. A person with
masonry skills is on the top of their current wish list followed by materials
like glass patio doors that open out onto the patio replacing the big windows on
the west side of the Koinonia building.
Memorials
Committee is on the move with great projects and new ideas! New membership is
more than welcomed and appreciated – it’s necessary! (This note is especially
pointed to those with masonry skills and materials to give a good home!) A much
appreciative Thanks goes out to all our hard working contributors.
Scholarship Committee
sponsors eight students for 2002/2003
On June 1st, Pan van
Loben Sels and Pastor Larry Emery of the Carel van Loben Sels Scholarship
Committee presented awards to Anna Cardenas, Katie Wiseman and Summer Morris who
graduated last month with their class of 2003. Anna is using hers to continue
her music career at UC Santa Barbara, Summer is heading to Sacramento State
University with her award, and Katie is saving hers until she returns from her
Rotary exchange student studies in South America.
“It’s been wonderful to make
these presentations for the last 22 years,” says Pan. “It’s very gratifying to
be a part of these college bound people, and we’re glad to help the young people
of our church. It’s a bond formed between the kids and the church that will go
on and be remembered.”
Last year, scholarship awards
went to Caroline Wilson, Bryan Wiseman, Sutton Morris, John Ortega and Justin
Emery who graduated June, 2002. Caroline is returning shortly from a year in
Argentina with the Rotary exchange program with plans to enter college this
fall, and Bryan, Justin, John and Sutton are continuing their educational
journeys begun in the fall of 2002 at Sacramento area colleges.
The
Scholarship Committee was formed in 1980 after it was suggested by Pastor
Hugget, and since then has supported many graduates from the church family to
help with college expenses. It continues to support higher education goals in a
living memorial that is carried on in the lives of young people.
Calling all kids and adults!
We’re having a GREAT time in
Sunday school! Come and join us on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. We are talking
about just what the Bible is and what it contains. Since we all need a hero
sometimes, our heroes of discussion are coming from the Bible. We are also
memorizing scripture and those who memorize –and can recite correctly– get
awards!
Currently there are six children
who regularly attend. We really need help from those who can fill in for our
regular teachers when they are absent. If you’d like to spend a Sunday morning
with our Sunday school group – and they are a GREAT group– please call me at
776-1363.
Yours in Christ,
Edna Williams, Children’s
ministry
Do you love to sing?
On Sunday, June 8, Peter Mondeel
invited those who love to sing to stay after to practice a song and join a
“Summer Choir.” On Sunday, June 15th, it was a pleasant surprise when
more than ten people showed up before the service to practice and perform “It is
Well With My Soul.” The invitation is still open, so if you’d like the join the
Summer Choir, stick around after Church and track down Peter. He’ll give you the
scoop on what’s coming up.
